Here & There
This group of works was inspired by a residency at C.R.E.T.A. Rome during February/March, 2020. Some of the pieces and studies were created in the residency studio in Rome, Italy, while others are continuations of the same aesthetic and ideas, produced in my home studio in Arizona. While in Rome, I studied Roman replicas and Greek original Hellenistic sculptures to observe how ancient artists portrayed intense emotional narratives through non-idealized human forms. Ancient Greek and Roman portrait busts, elaborate hairstyles, goddess figures, and the duality of herms also influenced the work. I used these aesthetics to examine themes of humanity’s interconnectedness and ability to handle transitions as the global pandemic swelled and forced all of us to confront those ideas for ourselves. This work was partially funded by a Research and Development Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
